The film Silently is a poetic, bitter and moving account of the daily lives of people who scream in silence. In this work, Mostafavi distances himself from the classical narrative and, using profound mise-en-scènes, visual cues and sometimes shocking metaphors, depicts a bitter world in which violence flows not in screams but in silence.

In this film, silence acts as a hidden wound. Wounds that are deeply rooted in human relationships, society, and the psyche of the characters. The characters are caught in a deep crisis of poverty, family breakdown, despair, and everyday anxiety. “Silent” is the story of a hell that screams in the absence of sound.

The Silent Film is Majidreza Mostafavi’s third film, after Unripe Pomegranates and Astigmatism, which significantly emphasizes formal aspects, symbolic mise-en-scènes, and visual semantics.

The use of symbols such as donkeys to represent human exploitation, fire as a desire for decay, and snow to cover up corruption, indicates Mostafavi’s intelligent attempt to create a meaningful world.
