The roots of the stories of One Thousand and One Nights are a combination of Persian, Indian, Arabic, and Mesopotamian traditions. Its original source was the Persian book of One Thousand Fables, which was popular in ancient Iran and whose narratives were later translated into Arabic.
The character of Scheherazade and the narrative structure of the Consecutive Nights originate from this Iranian tradition. Some of the stories, especially those involving magic, talking animals, and mythological elements, entered the collection from Sanskrit literature and Indian texts.
The series “One Thousand and One Nights” by Mostafa Kiai shows that this director, after successful experiences in cinema and television, intends to enter a more complex and ambitious realm this time; a realm that combines crime drama, psychological suspense, and traces of bitter urban realism.
Alongside this modern, crisis-ridden world, there are subtle but meaningful references to the classic tales of “One Thousand and One Nights.” The concept of Scheherazade and Malek is evident in the subtext of the narrative: a woman who earns her living by storytelling and a ruler who lives by fear and violence.
